Dresden Village IGA Destroyed in Fire

Hey Ya'll
Had a news article sent to me telling of the Fire which occurred Thursday morning. The Dresden Village IGA was the only Grocery store in Dresden and the building had been providing it's services for nearly 50 years, first as an A&P then as the IGA. The building was once owned by Dave Longaberger, but was sold to the Vansickle family in the 80's.

Three local fire departments helped battle the blaze, dropping local reservoir levels to the point that authorities almost had to close local schools to ease demands on the supply. No foul play is suspected, accidental causes  are being looked into but haven't been yet determined.

Tami Longaberger was saddened by the loss to the community, she worked as a teenager as a cashier and stock girl with her Aunts and Father, Dave Longaberger.

Thankfully no one was injured, but the community has lost a very important building both in its pantries and its hearts.

Just the facts

Today I give you: A few facts about Longaberger
The Longaberger Company is the #1 maker of handmade baskets in the US
The company sells around 10 million baskets a year
around 45,000 people are proud to call themselves independent sales associates.
Half of the sales of those 45,000 consultants are made up of baskets, the other half is made up of pottery, wrought iron, and fabrics.
The home office in Ohio is a seven story replica of a Market basket.
The replica's handles are 75-tons each.
Nearby the Home office is a Top rated golf course, a hotel and the Longaberger Homestead.
The company was founded by Dave Longaberger in 1973, it is now headed by his Daughters Tammi and Rachel.
As of 1990 Forbes considers the company one of the 500 largest private firms.
The company has also helped to revitalize the community of Dresden Ohio, starting in 1988 Dave Longaberger began improvement, adding the Longaberger Fitness Center, The Swimming Center, The Senior Citizens Center (Where Grandma Bonnie Longaberger often visited up until her passing in 2008) an addition to the high school.
Dresden Ohio also features the World's largest basket (according to Guinness), Longaberger University (used for corporate training)

Longaberger Pottery is Earthenware.

Longaberger has a Weaver Request program, where a select few weavers travel the country to special events to demonstrate their craft, (I've personally done this, it's awesome!)
Environmentally the company uses selective harvesting of the maple trees that are used for the baskets, they use water based stains, and recyclable plastic

Longaberger Facts and Trivia

This trivia list which I found really interesting, is from  basketamericana.net

1. New Longaberger baskets are only sold through the Longaberger Factory Store and through “Home Show Consultants” and not in retail stores. There are approximately 45,000 independent Home Consultants located in all U.S. states who sell Longaberger products directly to customers.
2. Longaberger baskets can be shipped back to the factory for repair.
3. The strips used to weave Longaberger baskets are made out of solid maple.
4. Longaberger originally started in 1976 as J.W.’s Handwoven Baskets in Dresden Ohio.
5. Longaberger’s basketmaking operation comprises the largest collection of artisans in the nation.
6. Longaberger employs approximately 2,800 employees.
7. Longabergers products not only include handcrafted hardwood maple baskets, but also basket dividers and lids, vitrified pottery and dinnerware, wrought iron products, fabric accessories for baskets and for other home uses, beverage ware, flatware and other items for the home.
8. The longaberger home office was designed to look like a giant Longeberger basket and includes a grand staircase, player piano and marble floors and a seven story atrium. The majority of the cherry woodwork used in the Home Office was harvested from the Longaberger Golf Club in Hanover; dried, sawed, shaped and finished at their Construction Woodshop. Building capacity: 500 employees. Building footage: 180,000 square feet.
9. Longaberger family signatures significantly increase the value of a basket. Especially rare are signatures of Dave, Grandma Bonnie, Tami, or Rachel. Multiple signatures are the rarest.
10. Because of the high value, many people cover their Longaberger baskets on their homeowners insurance.

What is Longaberger?

The following is a brief history of Longaberger AND a great game to play at a show!
Enjoy
~Missy
To play the game have the guests sit or stand in a circle. Start with either the hostess holding one secret (or not so secret) gift, or have a few guests holding small gifts (travel mugs, notepads etc.) Read the story aloud and each time you say RIGHT, or LEFT those holding the gift need to pass the item RIGHT or LEFT.

Over 100 years ago RIGHT in the middle of Dresden, Ohio, there lived a boy named J.W. Longaberger. He LEFT school at the age of 17 to become a full-time basket maker. He took care in selecting just the RIGHT maple tree to be cut into just the RIGHT sized splints, weaving them just RIGHT, until they fit just RIGHT, tacking them just RIGHT, until they looked just RIGHT, sometimes attaching a splint RIGHT over top from the RIGHT to the LEFT side making a handle. When he finished, his 12 children would play with the splints that were LEFT. As they grew, he showed them the RIGHT way to weave a basket. After the children LEFT school each afternoon, they would hurry RIGHT home to help weave baskets. As time passed, baskets were LEFT at home because stores began using paper bags.
Now J.W. only made baskets for special occasions. Like at Easter - when the neighborhood children would wait RIGHT on J.W.'s porch to get just the RIGHTsized basket to be LEFT out for the Easter Bunny to fill with candy. In 1973, his son Dave noticed baskets were making a comeback in department stores. He LEFT the store with the idea to reintroduce his father's baskets. He went RIGHT to his father and told him of his bright idea. They began weaving baskets RIGHT away and, as anticipated, he had the RIGHT idea - the baskets were popular. LEFT with the sense of value and family heritage, they were on the RIGHT track. Today, Longaberger baskets are RIGHT at the top of home shows. They are in high demand and RIGHTLY so, having the RIGHT amount of quality, the RIGHT amount of heritage, the RIGHT amount of detail, the RIGHT size basket for organizing, and the RIGHT look for decorating.

There are many uses I will share or ideas that can be LEFT to your imagination. There are special monthly feature baskets for holidays and baskets for all the RIGHT occasions. There are RIGHT-handed made baskets with the splints being woven from RIGHT to LEFT with the last splint ending on the LEFT side. And LEFT-handed baskets being woven from LEFT to RIGHT with the last splint ending on the RIGHT side. Each basket is unique and still hand-woven, with just the RIGHT maple splints, weaving over and under, RIGHT and LEFT, tapping just RIGHT, tacking just RIGHT until all that's LEFT is the staining. The weavers sign each basket RIGHT on the bottom and it is shipped RIGHT to the hostess. So don't be LEFT without one. Order your basket RIGHT away.
